What’s compression therapy?

Elite athletes have been using compression therapy in its various guises to recover from and prepare for their workouts for years. Essentially the idea is that compressing and decompressing parts of the body encourages blood flow and boosts your circulatory system. Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is a therapy that uses air pressure pulses to improve circulation and help treat muscle fatigue. Like many workout recovery technologies developed over the past few decades, IPC has its origins as a therapeutic medical device. Through the consolidation of research and results in a medical setting, the benefits and effects gradually made their way into the world of improving athletic performance and post-training recovery. Normatec are one of the biggest names in the compression therapy market and their space-like suits are some of the best around.

What compression therapy options will you find in our recovery lounge?

Regardless of the sport, training regimen or level of activity you engage in, the Normatec recovery system uses state of the art compression therapy to keep you performing at your best. Our recovery room includes a focused series of compression leg sleeves and full-body garments. They’re built for comfort and convenience to give you the freedom to incorporate recovery whenever and wherever it fits into your schedule.

How does it work?

If you’ve ever gone for a run and felt like your legs were on fire, or been so sore the day following a workout that you could barely walk, then you know what it’s like to experience muscle fatigue. This happens when the body is not able to deliver adequate amounts of oxygen to muscles during and after exercise. The result is reduced performance and an extended recovery time.

When you walk into our Performance Lounge, you’ll find a bunch of inflatable sleeves or boots. When placed on your limbs and switched on, intermittent air pulses are used to improve circulation. The initial medical application was for treating lymphedema and post-op patients. The pumping motion of the equipment provides an added benefit over simple compression therapy since it is similar to how a heart beats while circulating blood throughout the body.

Your circulatory system is how your body delivers oxygen and nutrients to your cells while simultaneously removing metabolic waste like lactic acid and carbon dioxide. So, better blood flow equals a quicker recovery, less muscle soreness and an increase in flexibility and range of motion.

Is compression therapy really necessary?

We get it. It can be hard enough to find time in your busy schedule for your workouts let alone recovery, but it’s important to remember that you need to take care of yourself in order to do your best.  Coming into P3 for a compression therapy session at least once a week will fast track your muscle recovery and improve your athletic performance so you can get back to doing what you love faster.

Our compression therapy room is one of the most relaxing environments on the Gold Coast. Decked out with a gold class cinema vibe, you can just sit back and relax watching TV or enjoying the peace and quiet while you take your recovery to the next level.
